Adam

The First Man and First Prophet · آدم
IslamMandaeism

Adam, peace be upon him, is the first human being and the first prophet in Islam. The Quran names him in 25 verses, seven of them addressed to the Children of Adam, and tells how Allah taught him, honored him, forgave him, and chose him. Because the Quran is the final revelation, it is the measure by which the earlier accounts of Adam are read.

Named in the Quran
1.
“And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, ‘Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.’”
Allah gives Adam knowledge, and the angels are asked to name what he was taught.
2.
“And [mention] when We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate before Adam’; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.”
The angels prostrate before Adam; only Iblees refuses, out of arrogance.
3.
“And We said, ‘O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.’”
One tree is forbidden, with the warning that approaching it is wrongdoing.
4.
“Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.”
Adam receives words from his Lord and his repentance is accepted.
5.
“Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ‘Imran over the worlds -”
Allah chooses Adam, with Noah and the families of Abraham and ‘Imran, over the worlds.
6.
“Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was.”
Jesus is compared to Adam: both came into being when Allah said “Be.”
7.
“And recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], ‘I will surely kill you.’ Said [the former], ‘Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].”
The story of Adam’s two sons, told so that people learn Allah accepts from the righteous.
8.
“And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They said, ‘Yes, we have testified.’ [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, ‘Indeed, we were of this unaware.’”
The covenant taken from the children of Adam: “Am I not your Lord?”
9.
“And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.”
Allah honors the children of Adam and prefers them over much of creation.
10.
“And Adam and his wife ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.”
Adam errs, and the next verse (20:122) says his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness.
