Muhammad

The Seal of the Prophets · also named Ahmad
Islam

Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the final messenger of Allah. The Quran names him four times as Muhammad and once as Ahmad, and it says the people of the earlier scriptures find him written in the Torah and the Gospel. Because the Quran is the last revelation, it is the measure by which the earlier books are read.

Named in the Quran
1.
“Muhammad is not but a messenger. Other messengers have passed on before him.”
Revealed after the Battle of Uhud, reminding the believers that the message outlives the messenger.
2.
“Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.”
The verse that establishes him as the last prophet.
3.
“Those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad, and it is the truth from their Lord, He will remove from them their misdeeds.”
Belief in the revelation given to him is tied to forgiveness.
4.
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are firm against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves.”
The same verse says his companions are described in the Torah and the Gospel.
5.
Quran 61:6 · as Ahmad
Jesus, son of Mary, says he brings “good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad.”
The only place he is named Ahmad, foretold by Jesus himself.
Foretold in earlier scripture

The Quran

The final word
“Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel.”
Jesus gives good tidings of a messenger after him named Ahmad.

The Bible

Passages Muslim scholars point to
Deuteronomy 18:18
“I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth.”
John 14:16
“He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.”
Isaiah 42:1, 11
A chosen servant who brings judgment to the nations, where “the villages that Kedar doth inhabit” rejoice. Kedar was a son of Ishmael.

Christians and Jews read these Bible passages differently. This page presents them as the Quran frames them: Allah says the earlier communities find Muhammad written in their books.
